Hebrews: “Melchizedek as King and Priest”

Hebrews 7:1-10

The narrative of Melchizedek points us to Jesus Christ as a greater High Priest.

John 3:14

I Peter 1:18-19

2 Timothy 3:16-17

I. His historical event as King and Priest. (vs 1)

1. He was a king.

2. He was a priest.

3. He was a greater priest than Abraham.

He was an eternal priest.

II. His background as King and Priest. (vs 1-3)

1. He was the king of Salem (Jerusalem).

2. He was a priest of the most high God.

3. He was paid tithes by Abraham.

4. He was an eternal priest like the Son of God.

“He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days

nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.” (vs 3)

III. His superiority as Priest. (vs 4-10)

1. What role do individuals like Abraham, Moses, David, and Mary play in the history of Christianity? How are their lives connected to each other and to Jesus?

2. Read Genesis 14 and Psalm 110 and discuss what these two passages reveal about Melchizedek. How do the references to Melchizedek in these two passages relate to and inform the priesthood and kingship of Jesus Christ?

3. What were the roles of priests in the Old Testament? Read Exodus 28 and Leviticus 4. Explain how their roles are a “type” pointing to the “reality” of Jesus.

4. What conclusion does the author draw from the fact that Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek?

5. Why does the author of Hebrews choose to compare Melchizedek to Abraham? Why do you think he also chose to compare him to Levi?
